A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY
The
art of Jaye Alison Moscariello inspires us to laugh, to marvel, and above
all, to think. In some ways, her vibrantly colored works are sensuous
and fun, but this artist is not merely out to please. She uses her joyous
sense of humor and her cutting-edge satire to communicate intense social
messages, and on each surface she leaves substantial evidence of her own
social conscience.
Moscariello was born
in Connecticut, on January 28, 1954 at Grace New Haven (now Yale
New Haven) Hospital to Elaine and Alfonso Moscariello. As a young
child her grandmother raised Moscariello while her parents worked. She
would remain transfixed by her grandmothers knee and watch intently
as her grandmother would take discarded shirt boards from the dry cleaners,
and transform them with an ordinary ballpoint pen, into magical and exotic
faraway places. Years later, drawing figures strongly in Moscariellos
work. It was the idea that one is able transcend ones immediate
environs with just a few lines on a piece of paper that captured
Moscariellos lifelong devotion to this medium.
Moscariello was a
recipient of a full-tuition scholarship for Paier College of Art in Hamden,
Connecticut. At Paier, she studied under the tutelage of Rudolph Zalinger,
Jean Day Zalinger, Leo and Ruth Stoutsenberger, Dr. John DiGioia, Dean
Keller and Joseph Funaro, and other fine artists. Her course work continued
at the Creative Workshop Studios and Yale University School of Art and
Architecture. She moved to New York City and studied at the Art Students
League and New School of Social Research.
In 1988, New York,
she co-created, with Alexandra Carmel, a program for artists. The course
(later named Breaking Out) was designed to dismantle obstacles
to ongoing creative production. Moscariello and Carmel were the original
test subjects. Its effectiveness was apparent in the stream of new
work that emerged; large, bright and expressionistic works on canvas and
paper, that transported Moscariello from the self-imposed rigidity of
her earlier classical training.
Her paintings have
been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Washington, D.C. and
at diverse venues on both the east and west coasts, including NYC and
LA galleries, and internationally in New Delhi, India and London, UK.
Recently Moscariello
was one of four artists to take part in the first video billboard art
show in Los Angeles. Five of the artists images were shown outdoors
at the Key Club on Sunset Boulevard, on two video billboards, every half-hour,
24 hours a day, to a drive-by audience. The Modern Art Gallery, in downtown
Los Angeles, recently honored Moscariello with her first solo show. The
show, Inside/Out, featuring twenty-seven largely autobiographical
works on paper, was a success measured by the tremendous viewer response
the work evoked. There was an engagement with the work that Im
glad was videotaped, because no one might believe me otherwise!
Community work figures
largely in the scheme of things for Moscariello. Many of her projects
are developed around a specific group with special needs. She along with
artist Sheila Pinkel of LA just recently collaborated on a national poster
project for Physicians for Social Responsibility. I dont strive
for a balance in life, I go in the direction that calls most loudly, be
it political, humanitarian or downright expressionism. In these harsh
times, the art world may be the only forum available to have ones
voice heard. Her work is included in the National Archives.
